We are so incredibly blessed to have an incredible backyard space at our house for us to enjoy and for our boys to play. But as much as we love having a backyard space and patio, it’s one of the areas of our home that we’ve neglected the most. The area under our deck has cement flooring and was becoming a catch-all for all of the kids’ toys but I really wanted to turn it into a space for the whole family to use.
Since things have finally slowed down, I finally decided to tackle the project so we can enjoy a space we’re all comfortable in before the end of summer. Our new patio space is finally all done and I’m so excited to share it with you today!
Our Patio Refresh
When it came to designing our patio, I wanted to make sure it felt like an extension of our home. The difference with this space though is that I wanted to include some contrast and natural elements since it is outside and I think we did a pretty good job of doing both of those things!

The Furniture
For the furniture, I knew I wanted to incorporate a natural wood element but didn’t want to spend a ton of money. Enter: Walmart. I am a longtime Walmart shopper when it comes to the boys, household items, and toiletries but it’s been a while since I purchase any furniture there. But when I saw this set, I knew it would be perfect for our patio refresh.
Since our patio space is larger, we wanted to break it up into two areas: a living area and a dining area. In our dining area, we added this table and these chairs, which I love. To pull the space together, we also added this rug below the table.
In the living space, we added this patio set, these chairs, and an egg chair for lounging and purchased a second rug (the same one!) to ground the space. The rugs are also great for the boys! We also decided to hang up an outdoor TV in the living space since the patio is covered and we’ve, surprisingly, got much more use out of the space than I was expecting! If designing an outdoor patio, I also highly recommend adding in a bar cart into the design if you have space.
The Decor
If you know me, you know I can’t resist adding a little decor to a space, even if it is outside! With that said though, since our patio is (after all) outside, I didn’t want to spend too much time or money decorating the space. Instead, I kept things petty simple and added some vases to our table, some faux plants, and a candle to the coffee table, and incorporated some shelving below our TV with some candles and faux flowers.
